The 16 -19 bursary for looked after children and care leavers
From September 2011 the new bursary replaces the existing Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for some vulnerable groups of young people.
Looked After Children & Care Leavers will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200 per academic year, paid direct to them by the college or sixth form they attend. Young people who are already in receipt of the EMA but will still be under 19 on 31st August 2011 will now receive the guaranteed bursary in stead of the EMA.
