The SANS was devised for children with severe disabilities as an alternative to the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The SANS was created by a group of professionals from social care, education and health. This was a response to the legal requirement for carers of all Looked After Children aged 4-16 to annually complete the SDQ to provide a measure of children’s emotional and behavioural health. Carers of children with severe disabilities may return the questionnaire uncompleted (as an exception) if they feel it is inappropriate for the child/ren they care for. In Norfolk, the SANS is issued to carers of children with severe disabilities alongside the SDQ, to be completed with their support worker. A teacher version is also available in order to get a perspective from school. The information can be used to contribute to reviews and other discussions as deemed appropriate. The SANS forms part of the child’s record and should be treated as such.
